Heeramandi: Unveiling the Origin of the Web Series Title – Richa Chadha Reveals All

Richa Chadha is a versatile actress who continually surprises audiences with the range of her performances. From portraying the fiery Nagma Khatoon in Anurag Kashyap’s “Gangs of Wasseypur” to embodying the role of a hopeless yet courageous wife in “Sarbjit,” Richa has proven her talent and versatility time and again. In her upcoming venture, “Heeramandi,” directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, she will be seen in an extravagant costume avatar, portraying the character of a courtesan.

Renowned as one of Bollywood’s most talented actresses, Richa has delivered breathtaking performances in movies like “Fukrey,” “Gangs of Wasseypur,” “Masaan,” and many others. During a detailed discussion about her experience working with Sanjay Leela Bhansali, the actress revealed that her inclusion in the cast of “Heeramandi” initially surprised many. Richa’s previous body of work may not align or resonate with Bhansali’s grand sets and epic narratives, but true artists cannot be confined to one particular mold. It seems that Bhansali’s world found its way to Richa in a mystical manner.

Speaking about her collaboration with the director on an episode of “Kiska Brand Bajega,” Richa shared, “Everything about it is glittery, beautiful, and grand. The jewelry we wear in the film is like vintage pieces that have a certain allure on camera, and the costumes are opulent and heavy.”

Discussing Bhansali’s renowned working style, which is often considered demanding, the actress expressed her admiration, stating, “He is someone who not only understands the art of storytelling and visual aesthetics, but he also comprehends his own brand and what people have come to expect from him.” Richa went on to praise Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s unwavering commitment to delivering quality in all his works, a trait that shines through in his filmmaking.

Passionate about her upcoming web series, “Heeramandi,” Richa shed light on the historical significance behind the project and the reason behind its chosen title. She revealed, “Heeramandi, the market that existed in pre-partition India, was named after Heera Singh, a king. It was commonly referred to as Heera Singh ki Mandi.”
